King Kamehameha IV gave John A.Kauhi Mahoe's father the land in which is now Schofield (U.S. Army Military) and named the ranch on that land Leilehua, because the lehua blossoms were in season then. The lei of the lehua is rare today and legend has it that if one picks the blossoms from the plant, rain is sure to fall that day. 1924: Schofield High and Grammar School was built on the site of King Kalakaua's hunting ground, where lehua trees flourished. Leilehua's name is from the Lehua flower. The high school division was a branch of McKinley High School. 1926: Leilehua's first graduating class. 1928: Leilehua adopted its colors, green and gold - the green of the pineapple fields and the gold of its fruit, which abounded in the area and was one of the main sources of income for the area. 1929: Leilehua's first newspaper, The Sentinel, rolled off the press. 1932: Leilehua adopted the MULE as its mascot, the symbol of the U. S. Army and the mascot of the United States Military Academy (USMA), located at West Point, New York. The military used the mule as there main source of power back in the early century. 1949: The Schofield and Leilehua High Schools were combined and built on its present 32 acre site in the historic town of Wahiawa. The layout of the Leilehua facility is one of openness tranquility and harmony with the environment. Since its beginning in 1924, Leilehua has flourished and grown in size. Today, it is comprised of a diverse student population. Its' programs, facilities, and staff provide the students with excellent opportunities for educational, social, and personal growth. 1993: Leilehua was selected a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence. The high school is located in beautiful central Oahu in the town of Wahiawa (see map below). LHS is nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education and fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Leilehua is a school of about 1,700 students and about 135 faculty and staff members. Approximately 50% of the student body are from military families stationed at Schofield Barracks and at the Naval Communication Station in Whitmore. Today, buildings of an older vintage are blended among an abundance of trees and greenery. Classrooms, while lacking the size and sophistication of newer facilities, are airy and bright. Large windows provide adequate ventilation and natural lighting. Click here for some recent pictures of LHS taken by Sid on a recent visit . This link utilizes the PDF format.
